Get The F Out: The Virus (Los Angeles, CA)

Get The F Out: Dab Best!

"Get the F Out" states on their website that they offer "Virtual Reality that will blow you away". We decided to try out their game, "The Virus", late on a Thursday night and as a duo, we weren't sure what to expect given it was an eight player room. From their site:

"A deadly virus has ravaged the planet.  Join a team of top scientists and descend hundreds of feet to a military laboratory below.  There you must discover an antidote and save the world. But be careful not to set off the computerized decontamination system or you may be smashed flat by the slowly moving laboratory walls."

While there are a LOT of lab themed escape rooms out there, there are some unique elements at GTFO that were fresh and exciting. There was an Easter egg and I feel all rooms should have this as it makes the game more special for those who have extra time to spare. Given we were only two, when I saw the lab my initial thoughts were "we're toast, there are a LOT of locks in this room"...

Puzzles, Technology & Set Design

There were a lot of puzzles with a diverse mix of high tech and low tech things to solve. We had Bob as our in game actor and he was an enthusiastic lab assistant/cheerleader for our group. This may sound petty but enthusiasm is contagious and we felt it heightened our experience.

The VR intro was fun and I really encourage people to look around the virtual space to fully experience the immersion. The feeling of drilling down into the Earth into the lab is effectively communicated with this technology and while the footprint of the game is on the smaller side, the VR intro makes the game feel a lot bigger than it physically was. I know some people aren't the biggest fans of having a long introduction and I feel the same for long movie intros but the novelty of using a VR set to set the mood was really fun.

We started off slower than a tortoise and at the 20min mark had barely solved anything. There was a process driven task which I epically struggled with (more because of me than anything) and Sarah had to come to the rescue. We finally hit our stride and had the honor of being the first duo to successfully escape the room and solve the Easter egg!

As for the set, it looked pretty much like what you'd expect a lab to look like which isn't the most difficult thing to do for this theme.

Memorable Moments

The funny introduction, the actor and the "aha" puzzles were spectacular. I can't speak for those who play with a lot of strangers or who have a different actor but for what we had, we loved the game. I feel that starting and ending strong are important elements in an escape room that are often overlooked. Thanks to Bob we had both a great intro and finale.

Room For Improvement

A tad heavy on the padlocks during midgame and a smaller footprint than a lot of the other LA based rooms. Like most public games, having a full room will greatly affect your gameplay.

Overall Thoughts

We had a fun time and feel that the room would be suited for both beginners (in large numbers) and enthusiasts. The high energy, humor and nice use of tech made the room a standout for us.
